What do you think?

Press Statement28 February 2006COMPOSITION OF LIST OF PEOPLE TARGETED FOR ARRESTEXPOSES THE FALSITY OF THE COUP ALLEGATIONAND THE VILE OBJECTIVE OF THE ARROYO REGIMEBy Prof. Jose Maria SisonChief Political ConsultantNational Democratic Front of the PhilippinesI have read the excellent report of Sheila Coronel, titled “Government crackdown intensifies, appearing in the February 27, 2006 issue of Inside PCIJ (Philippine Center of Investigative Journalism). The findings of the report can help to expose the falsity of the coup allegation and the vile objective of the Arroyo regime. The report carries the list of 59 persons submitted to the Justice Department by Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management of the Philippine National Police. The listed persons are described as “guilty of rebellion and insurrection committed on February 24, 2006”, the day Gloria M. Arroyo announced that she had preempted an attempted coup and issued Proclamation 1017 to declare a state of national emergency.I have the honor of being at the top of the entire list. But the point is to analyze the composition of the list and to draw some conclusions. The list includes 44 persons who are alleged communist leaders and members, six members of Congress who belong to the party list groups Bayan Muna, Gabriela Women’s Party and Anakpawis (Toiling Masses), three retired military officers who were leaders of the Reform the Armed Forces Movement and three lieutenants. We notice from the list the predominance of 50 civilians who are known progressives and a small number of former military officers. We also notice the absence of the names of Brig. General Danilo Lim of the First Scout Ranger Regiment, Colonel Ariel Querubin of the First Marine Brigade and Chief Supt. Marcelino Franco of the PNP Special Action Force who were supposed to be players in the alleged coup attempt foiled by the loyalists of the Arroyo regime last Friday, February 24. Indeed, they should not be in the list just as those already in the list should not be.We have enough factual basis to state that the Arroyo regime fabricated the so-called coup plot of communists and Rightist officers, supposedly foiled last February 24 but still necessitating Proclamation 1017. The canard was used to disperse the mass actions celebrating Edsa 1, to attack mainly the patriotic and progressive forces in the mass movement, intimidate the mass media and suppress democratic rights in the long haul . The overriding purpose of the regime to start with Proclamation 1017 on the road of fascist dictatorship and state terrorism by way of prolonging itself in power and ramming through charter change to serve the interests of US imperialism and the worst of local reactionary interests.###

NUJP Calling all journalists

NATIONAL UNION OF JOURNALISTS OF THE PHILIPPINES105-A Scout Castor Street , Barangay Laging Handa, Quezon CityTelefax: (02)4117768 Email: info@nujp.org Website: www.nujp.org
Dear Friends in the Media,

The Philippine press today faces enormous risks. The Arroyo administration, which has made it a policy to be antagonistic toward the press, considers us an enemy. Indeed, we are right there in Presidential Proclamation 1017; our supposed recklessness is being used to justify the issuance of an edict whose implications on press freedom, on civil liberties and on democracy itself are so severe they are, in a word, terrifying.
Never has the Philippine media and the Filipino public seen such display of arrogance of power. At least not since the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos.
Silence is the best ally of tyranny. Which is why it heartens us – indeed, it inspires us – that the Philippine press has rose to the challenge of fighting for its freedom by defying Proclamation 1017.
Today, we ask you to once again let your voices be heard, to continue this defiance of authoritarianism. You will find below or attached to this message a statement/resolution/editorial which we hope you can publish or air. We hope to show to those in power that we are united, that we are strong, that we will not allow fear and intimidation to disrupt our way of life as journalists committed to the truth.
Thank you very much and more power to us all.-- ***********************************************************************NATIONAL UNION OF JOURNALISTS OF THE PHILIPPINESwww.nujp.org105-A Scout Castor Street (near Morato Avenue) Quezon City, PhilippinesTel.: (+632) 4117768Email: nujphil@gmail.com***********************************************************************Are you a journalist under threat? Who is GMA fooling?

THINK-TANK BELIES CLAIM POVERTY RATE IMPROVED UNDER GMA

One of the questionable economic achievements of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, as propagated by Cabinet secretary Ricardo Saludo, is that her administration was able to lift 1.9 million Filipinos from poverty. This was based on the reduction of the number of poor Filipinos between 2000 and 2003.

Amid heightened calls for the President to step down, Sec. Saludo cited Pres. Arroyo’s so-called economic achievements to prove that she remains the “best” leader for the country.

But according to independent think-tank IBON, what Sec. Saludo failed to mention was that the government was able to “achieve” this by setting an incredibly low poverty threshold.

The annual per capita poverty threshold set by the government using its 2003 Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) is P12,267. This means that the Arroyo administration believes that Filipinos can meet their basic needs with just P33.61 a day, or a monthly income of P1,022.25. In other words, a Filipino can only be considered “poor” if he has less than P33 a day.

This unbelievable poverty threshold is even lower than the $1 a day and $2 a day measures that are widely accepted by international development agencies as a measure of poverty.

Further, government says that P168.04 a day is sufficient for a family of five members to meet their minimum food and non-food needs. But IBON estimates that as of January 2006, a family of five members needs at least P449 a day to meet its basic needs.

Using this estimate and the government’s FIES, IBON says that 83% of the country’s families are considered poor, compared to government’s figure of only 24.7 percent.

IBON urges Malacañang to stop manipulating statistics to conceal the obvious state of increasing poverty in the country, and to claim that it has uplifted the economy. (end)
